Why we started Going Against the Grain
Kayla: Honestly, to begin it all started with Mike Brown and the BET special that came after his death. The fascination of how us as minorities get mistreated on a daily basis, but most of the attention goes to materialistic things. The Grain. The Grain, or society is what wears us down. The Grain is why young black females like me, try so hard to be perfect for people who we won't even remember in the next twenty years. I feel as if we should have a vision to do better. I feel as if we should have a vision to be better. For ourselves, as a community, race, class, nation etc. We need to do better and work towards being better, and it all starts with us.
Aspen: For me it all started my summer of 2016. Personally, I've always had a strong opinion about it but it wasn't until then that I started voicing my opinion. I was outraged by the world, I was angry which the mistreatment of minorities. As I watched the peaceful protests it saddened me to see my people having to come together to protest for a natural given right but brought a smile to my face to see us banding together. Much like these protesters, we must come together and be on one accord to achieve this one common goal. It all gets better with each step we take.
